In today's episode, I'm talking about what happens when the thing isn’t the thing. In rural and ag spaces, especially, we’re really good at shoving feelings down and pushing through. What’s underneath that “thing” is usually a whole pile of unacknowledged stuff (stress, exhaustion, grief, burnout, and more).

Recognizing this gives us so much freedom. It helps us stop shaming ourselves for our reactions, stop personalizing other people’s emotions, and create space to get curious about what’s really going on.

In this episode, I cover:

  1. How the “thing” that triggers us is often just the surface-level moment
  2. A real-life ranch example of displaced frustration between Tom and me
  3. What’s usually underneath the “thing”
  4. How recognizing when the thing isn’t the thing helps us and others
  5. Why this awareness creates space for curiosity, boundaries & more grounded communication
  6. How remembering that the thing isn’t the thing allows us to extend grace & compassion

Happy Body - A Wellness Podcast Zebediah Rice Ever wonder why a hug feels so good? Or a massage? Or hot baths? It is because these are the sorts of “words” our bodies understand. We can’t command a muscle to relax with a thought or a sentence. We have to speak the body’s language. We do this by combining love and attention with movement and touch. Music works too. This is the language our bodies understand. The Happy Body Podcast takes a different approach to tackling the challenge of physical pain and sickness by combining the wisdom of the ancient masters with modern science. It starts from the premise that sickness and physical pain are often manifestations of an inner imbalance. By connecting the lessons from modern neuroscience with the wisdom teachers of old, the Serena system may well help you on a path back to health. You will find techniques that draw on Feldenkrais, Alexander technique, contemporary physical therapy, nutrition science, and of course the latest medical research from the best doctors and medic What is New Legal Realism? What is New Legal Realism? Why is law so slow to get what's really happening? Why is it often so far away from our real-world experiences? The New Legal Realism movement springs from this frustration. The social sciences study how law really works, using systematic methods. But lawyers and policymakers don't often use that social science knowledge. Law students are never taught about the full range of social science that they could draw on to solve legal problems. At best, our lawyers and judges grab at bits and pieces -- some statistics here, interviews there, observations, experiments -- all jumbled up and often just plain wrong. Social scientists may be baffled about what lawyers need from them -- or how law approaches the world. And THAT'S why we need New Legal Realism, or "NLR." NLR doesn't choose one method or one kind of social science. It doesn't ignore the standards social sciences use to judge good research. But it also doesn't ignore how law works, or how lawyers talk. Law uses its own wei Player 2 Has Entered the Podcast MC Paperstacks & Full Metal Murk Two best friends, two dads, two gamers, two nerds, we are Player 2 Has Entered the Podcast and we love talking about videogames, anime, pop culture, and whatever else happens during our week.
