When They Don't Want What's Good for Them with JJ W.

from The Parenting Mentor · host Sue Groner

JJ is concerned about his 9-year-old daughter and 11-year-old  son, who lost interest in sports teams during covid. JJ is worried that his children won't get enough physical activity or social interaction, which can provide important life skills. Today, I talk with JJ about each of these aspects--physical and social--and we discuss alternative ways that his children can gain these skills. I note that his kids might be better suited for individual sports and talk about different ways that they can get social interaction all the same. I note that kids evolve and change over time, and I note the value of engaging your kids in the decision of what to do next. I talk about how the family is a team, and I talk about the benefits of viewing the end of one thing as an opportunity to try another. "Instead of quitting, say, 'Yeah, you've explored this. Now it's time to find something else to explore.'" - Sue Groner This week on The Parenting Mentor: Different ways to get physical activity and social interaction Quitting vs ending Recognizing that kids evolve and change over time Respectfully engaging your kids in the decision of what to do next The power of "why don't we give it a try?"
