When Truth Lights Up on the Inside

from The Bridegroom’s Voice Hosted by Renato Lunnon

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”Romans 12:2 NKJV Last night, Rachael and I were teaching a small group of women when we watched something happen that is difficult to describe but unmistakable when you see it. One woman had been fairly quiet during our previous times together. She listened and watched, but she rarely seemed eager to jump into the conversation. Last night was different. As Rachael and I began talking about how God renews the mind and transforms the whole person from the inside out, she leaned in. She responded, started making connections, followed the conversation closely, and began contributing thoughts of her own. You could almost see something lighting up on the inside. There was no dramatic spectacle. There was simply a moment when truth stopped being information and became possibility. This is what living revelation looks like. What We See Is Not the Whole Story We began with a story from 2 Kings 6. Elisha and his servant were surrounded by an enemy army. When the servant walked outside, he saw horses, soldiers, and chariots everywhere. From everything his natural eyes could see, the situation looked hopeless. But Elisha told him: “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”2 Kings 6:16 NKJV Then Elisha prayed: “LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.”2 Kings 6:17 NKJV Suddenly the servant saw something that had been present all along. The mountain was filled with horses and chariots of fire. The enemy army had not disappeared, and what the servant saw with his natural eyes was real. His problem was that he could only see part of reality. That gives us an important starting point: what I see may be real, but what I see is not always the whole story. Our circumstances are real. Pain is real. Feelings are real. The body is real. But there is more happening than what natural sight alone can perceive. And the same thing is true about us. There Is More to You Than What People Can See The teaching then moved into something very simple, but it opened up an entirely different way of understanding the human person: I am a spirit. I have a soul. I live in a body. The body is the part of us that interacts with the natural world. The soul is our inner life, including the mind, the will, and the emotions. The spirit is the deepest part of us, the part that relates to God. That means there is far more happening inside a person than what anyone can see from the outside. Someone may look calm while the mind is racing. A person may know something is true while the emotions are still struggling to feel it. Someone may understand God’s love intellectually while the inner life is still learning how to receive it. This is why transformation cannot simply be reduced to outward behavior. God is interested in the whole person. Your Story Begins With God One of the most important truths Rachael and I taught was that our story begins with the Father. Scripture calls Him the Father of spirits and the Father of lights. Before the world placed labels on us, before anyone rejected us, wounded us, praised us, ignored us, accepted us, or told us what we were worth, there was God. The world does not get the first word concerning who we are. God does. Genesis tells us that humanity was made in His image and likeness. Our value did not begin when someone approved of us, and it did not begin when we succeeded. Neither did it disappear when we failed. Our value begins with the One who made us. In Christ, Scripture says we are loved, adopted, made new, and called children of God. Yet that truth can already be spiritually real while the rest of our inner life is still learning how to live from it. That is where the renewing of the mind becomes so important. When the Mind Has Not Caught Up Yet A conflict can develop inside us. God says, “You are loved,” while the mind still says, “Nobody loves me.” God says, “You belong to Me,” while the mind says, “I do not belong anywhere.” God says, “You are a new creation,” while the mind says, “I will always be this way.” God says, “You are My child,” while the emotions may still feel rejected. The spiritual truth has been given, but the inner life still has to learn how to agree with it. This may be one of the most important things to understand about transformation: God’s truth can already be true about you before every part of you has learned how to live from it. That does not mean transformation is failing. It means transformation is still moving through the whole person. You Do Not Have to Believe Every Thought One of the simplest examples from the class may also be one of the most practical. Suppose someone does not call you back. That is the event. They did not call. But almost immediately the mind may begin filling in the blanks. “They do not care about me” can quickly become “Nobody really cares about me,” and then “I do not matter.” Within a few moments, an unanswered call has become an identity statement. But what actually happened? They did not call back. Why? You do not know yet. The mind supplied the rest. Renewing the mind teaches us to separate what happened from what we told ourselves it meant. The same is true of feelings. If I believe nobody wants me, I may feel rejected. If I believe something terrible is about to happen, I may feel afraid. If I believe I am a failure, I may feel shame. The feeling is real, but the feeling does not always tell the whole truth. Psalm 42 gives us a beautiful picture of this. The writer recognizes that his soul is cast down, but then he speaks truth to his own soul: “Hope in God.” He does not deny what he feels. He allows the feeling to be real without allowing it to become the final authority. Truth Can Interrupt a Pattern This is where the teaching became especially practical. A pattern often develops like this: Something happens → I have a thought → that thought affects how I feel → that feeling affects my choice → my choice becomes an action → repeated actions become a pattern. Think about rejection. Someone rejects me, and my old thought says, “Nobody wants me.” That thought produces fear and loneliness, and then I may decide, “I will do anything to keep this person.” That choice can lead to unhealthy behavior, and unhealthy behavior repeated long enough becomes a pattern. But truth can interrupt the sequence. The rejection happens and the old thought appears, but this time I stop. I remember that God loves me, I belong to Him, I am His child, I have value, and another person’s rejection does not determine my worth. The situation may not have changed. The other person may not have changed. But something inside me has changed, and because something changed inside me, I can now make a different choice. That is renewal. Over time, repeated renewed choices begin creating new patterns. Transformation From the Inside Out This was the part of the teaching where the room seemed to come alive. Once we could see how the different parts of a person fit together, transformation stopped feeling mysterious. The picture looked like this: THE FATHERThe Father of spirits. The Father of lights. The source of life. ↓ SPIRITReceives life and identity from God. ↓ MINDLearns what God says is true. ↓ WILLChooses to agree with truth. ↓ EMOTIONSBegin learning to respond to truth. ↓ BODY / ACTIONSOur life begins showing what God is changing inside us. This is transformation from the inside out, and one of the most freeing things about this picture is that it explains why different parts of us may change at different speeds. Your spirit may have received something before your mind fully understands it. Your mind may understand something before your will consistently chooses it. Your will may begin choosing truth while your emotions are still learning how to respond to that truth. Your actions may take time to reflect what God has already begun doing inside. You are not failing just because every part of you has not caught up at the same speed. Sometimes the rest of us is still learning how to live from what God has already begun. How Truth Becomes a Way of Life The teaching gave us another simple progression: I hear the truth → I understand the truth → I believe the truth → I choose the truth → I practice the truth → the truth becomes part of the way I live. That process does not always happen instantly. Sometimes we hear something from God many times before it really sinks in. Sometimes we understand something long before we consistently choose it. Sometimes we choose truth before our emotions feel comfortable with the choice. Then we practice that truth again and again until one day we realize that what once felt unfamiliar has become part of the way we live. This is why Philippians 1:6 matters so much: “He who has begun a good work in you will complete it.”Philippians 1:6 NKJV God is still working. That is not an excuse to remain stuck. It is permission to recognize that transformation is a process, and that the process itself can be evidence that He has not abandoned the work. Five Truths to Remember By the end of the teaching, everything we had covered could be gathered into five simple truths. * What I see is not the whole story. God sees more than I see. * What I think matters. My thoughts affect my feelings and my choices. * My feelings are real, but they do not always tell me the whole truth. God’s truth is greater than what I feel. * God can teach me a new way to think. Old lies can be replaced with truth. * New thinking can lead to new choices and a new way of living. That is transformation. These are simple ideas, but simple does not mean shallow. Sometimes the truths that change us most deeply are the ones we can finally see clearly enough to live. When Truth Becomes Personal Last night, Rachael and I watched this process begin to happen in someone sitting right in front of us. A woman who had been quiet in previous weeks suddenly began engaging as the teaching unfolded. She was not merely repeating what was being said. She was seeing it. Something about the possibility of renewal had become personal. The truth was no longer simply that people can change. It was becoming, “I can change.” Perhaps that is one of the most beautiful moments in spiritual growth. It is the moment when a truth that has always been true suddenly becomes real to you. Information says, “This is something you should know.” Revelation says, “If this is true, then my story does not have to end where I thought it would.” That is what Rachael and I watched lighting up on the inside. What Part of You Is Still Catching Up? Maybe your mind knows God loves you, but your emotions still feel unwanted. Maybe you understand that you are forgiven, but part of you keeps choosing self-punishment. Maybe you believe God is with you, but fear still has too much influence over your decisions. Maybe you know you are a new creation, but some of your actions still resemble an older version of you. Do not despise the part of you that is still learning. Bring it into the light and let truth keep moving through you. Let the mind learn, let the will choose, let the emotions catch up, and let new choices become new patterns until the life outside begins reflecting what the Father has been building inside. This Is Also Where Discernment Begins There is another reason this matters, and it is something we are going to explore much more deeply in the coming weeks. If my mind can add meaning to an event that was never actually there, if my feelings can be real without telling me the whole story, and if old wounds can influence how I interpret what is happening around me, then I need to learn how to discern. How do I know what is actually true? How do I distinguish the voice of God from fear, old patterns, assumptions, emotions, spiritual opposition, or simply my own interpretation? How do I recognize what the Holy Spirit is revealing, and how do I learn to see a situation from His perspective rather than only from mine? These are some of the questions we are going to begin exploring in an upcoming Bridegroom’s Voice series called: SEEING CLEARLYLearning Biblical Discernment in a World Full of Noise We are going to look at what discernment really is, how it is trained, how our character affects what we perceive, how to distinguish discernment from suspicion or fear, what Scripture means by discerning spirits, and how intimacy with Jesus teaches us to recognize His voice. If these are questions you have wrestled with, stay with us. There is much more coming. Today’s Reflection Where are you in the process right now? What truth has God already spoken that your mind, will, emotions, or actions are still learning to agree with? Can you identify an old pattern in your life and trace it backward? Consider what happened, what you thought about what happened, what you felt, what you chose, and what pattern eventually developed. Then ask the Father: What truth do You want to place into that pattern? That may be where transformation begins. Which part of the inside-out process do you most recognize right now: learning the truth, believing it, choosing it, or practicing it? Today’s Prayer Father, thank You that our story begins with You. You are the source of life, and You know every part of us better than we know ourselves. Thank You that You do not merely change behavior. You transform the whole person from the inside out. Open our eyes to what we cannot yet see. Show us the difference between what happened and what we decided it meant. Reveal the thoughts we have believed that do not agree with Your truth. Teach our minds what You say is true. Strengthen our wills to choose in agreement with that truth. Teach our emotions that they do not have to remain trapped in old conclusions. Let our actions begin reflecting what You are changing within us. When part of us is still catching up, remind us that You have not stopped working. Let us hear the truth, understand the truth, believe the truth, choose the truth, practice the truth, and eventually live from the truth. Complete what You have begun. Transform us from the inside out. In Jesus’ name, amen. Today’s Thought God’s truth can already be true about me before every part of me has learned how to live from it. Transformation is the journey of the whole person coming into agreement with what God has spoken.
