"Le son et l’inspiration du jeu de trompette de Mathias Eick plus proches d’un Paolo Fresu que d’un Ibrahim Maalouf ou même d’un Erik Truffaz, nous viennent de Norvège. Il joue un émouvant jazz narratif, comme un musicien de folk nous raconterait ses histoires. Son album When We Leave (ECM 2021) est en quelque sorte un recueil de contes, une petite saga nordique en 7 parties, dans un climat hyper-mélancolique mais tendre, une tension émotionnelle très chantante en même temps, proche de ce que Roland Barthes désigne dans ses Fragments d’un Discours Amoureux par le terme « délicatesse », une forme civilisée et artistique de la compassion. Et ce qui est une forme civilisée, artistique et affective de la musique, c’est bien celle de Mathias Eick." Serge Mariani, Art district radio
