When Yasmeen Met Abbie: Collaborations and Friendships in the Academy

from Academic Aunties

When we think about academic relationships, we often think of romantic partnerships between two academics. We might also think about the power relationships between, say, a supervisor and a student, or a dean and a professor. But we often don’t think about our research collaborations as an important kind of relationship. That’s surprising because research collaborations are, arguably, the most important relationships that you will ever have in academia. In this episode, we talk to Dr. Yasmeen Abu-Laban, a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Alberta and Dr. Abigail Bakan, a Professor in the Department of Social Justice Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. They are research collaborators, friends, and an inspiration for those of us who are doing work that is intensely contested and political.Related LinksIsrael, Palestine and the Politics of Race, by Yasmeen Abu-Laban and Abigail BakanDissident Friendships, edited by Elora Halim Chowdhury and Liz PhiliposeThanks for listening! Ozarks Haints N Hooch Ozarks Haints N Hooch Ozarks Haints N Hooch features two sisters from the Ozarks, Dawn Larsen and Dina Larsen Gillman. They gather bi-monthly remotely from two different states to offer stories about Ozark ghosts, monsters, superstitions, people, places, lore, and history - with a bonus twist, a cocktail themed to the feature story. Grab some hooch and join them, but know that “this ain’t no fancy, academic, check your references, kinda deal. This is four girls from the Ozarks sipping and spewing about haints, hooch, and history.” FB / Instagram: @OzarksHaintsNHooch Explicit Secret Feminist Agenda secretfeministagenda.com Secret Feminist Agenda is a weekly podcast about the insidious, nefarious, insurgent, and mundane ways we enact our feminism in our daily lives. Hosted by academic and podcaster Hannah McGregor. Explicit Your Aunties Could Never YOUR AUNTIES COULD NEVER Your Aunties Could Never bring you entertaining no-nonsense straight talk from women who aren't afraid to say all the things you wish you could say. AK, Farrah & Nana, are three friends from the UK who have lived life and are well respected in business endeavors and amongst friends and family. Elevating them to Elite Auntie status. The Aunties have a voice and are not fearful of being heard. Join them as they discuss topical news and politics, comment on popular culture, and give advice all from an informed (mature) Black woman's perspective. Think a daytime chat show but with seasoning, real talk & large amounts of Melanin Magic. Explicit Betwixt and Between Betwixt and Between Betwixt and Between are two witches and real life friends who curl up on the sofa amidst animals, tea and craft projects to chat about witchcraft. Sometimes we bring on knowledgeable guests and sometimes we use our own expertise from our academic backgrounds in theology and psychology to add to texture to our shows. But we always approach our subjects from a practical, personal, dirt-under-fingernails perspective. Explicit
