When You Cannot Sleep and Cannot Pray | Come Follow Me Sleep Meditation | Psalms 49–86

from Come Follow Me Meditations · host Pondereth

Rest tonight in a psalm written by someone who could not sleep either. A Come Follow Me sleep meditation for August 24–30, "I Will Declare What He Hath Done for My Soul" (Psalms 49–51; 61–66; 69–72; 77–78; 85–86, Asaph and David). Psalm 77 is a night song. Asaph lies awake with his hand stretched out in the dark, his soul refusing to be comforted, too troubled to speak — and he asks the questions no one says out loud: Will the Lord cast off forever? Is His mercy gone? Those questions were kept in scripture, not edited out. Then the psalm turns, not because the night ended, but because he says "I will remember" — the sea that opened, the bread in the morning, the cloud that led them. And he writes the line that has steadied people for three thousand years: "Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps are not known." In Psalm 63 another writer remembers God upon his bed, in the night watches, resting in the shadow of His wings. In Psalm 86 the promise is plain — "Thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive" — and in Psalm 51 David asks God to create in him a clean heart. If you cannot see the way forward tonight, that is not evidence God is absent — it may simply be the kind of path He is walking with you. Play this as you settle into bed and let the day go, one remembered mercy at a time.
