When You Can't Find the Words to Pray | Romans 8:26

The chairs are in a half circle before rehearsal. Somebody has already said the thing about the parking lot. And then a voice on your left says your name and asks if you would take us out, and you say sure, and you close your eyes, and the sentences arrive. They arrive in the shape they always arrive in. Father, we just thank you for this day. Be with the pastor. Prepare our hearts. Your mouth does the whole thing without asking you first, and it is not false, and every person in the circle says amen. And you stand up knowing you just performed a vocabulary you did not use once this week when you were by yourself.That is the good version. The other one is the morning it would not come at all. Not the words in a circle. Any words. You sat down to pray and there was nothing in you to say, and the silence in your own head sounded like a verdict on you.Romans 8:26. World English Bible. "In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don't know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can't be uttered."Look at who Paul says that about. Not new believers. Us. Paul says he has the same problem. The word he uses here shows up exactly once in the entire New Testament, right here. Hyperentygchano. Its root is a petition word. In Acts it describes people bringing a case to a Roman governor. Somebody steps in on your behalf and takes it to the one who can actually do something about it.Notice the direction of the traffic. It is not you generating something and sending it up. It is the Spirit himself, inside your inability, doing the work you could not do, in groanings that never become words at all. So the silence you have been reading as absence is occupied. Your inability to produce prayer is not the verdict on your standing with God. It is the condition the verse was written for.When was the last morning you had nothing to say to him? Go back to that room in your head today, and notice it was not empty.
