When You’re Afraid of Getting it Wrong

from Your Nightly Prayer: Evening Prayers for Christians · host Your Nightly Prayer

Psalm 32:8 is a promise worth holding onto in every season of difficult decision-making. "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I will counsel you with my loving eye on you." This is not a vending machine approach to guidance, where we input our question and receive the correct answer. It is the promise of a relationship, a loving, attentive, personal accompaniment through every choice we face. We often treat decision-making as though the goal is to find the single correct answer that unlocks God's perfect plan, and anything short of that risks catastrophe. But Jesus said He is the Way. Decisions are best made as we follow Him, not as we decode a map. The goal is not primarily to find the right path. It is to know and follow the right Person, trusting that He who walks with us is fully capable of redirecting what needs redirecting and redeeming what needs redeeming. You are not going to accidentally outmaneuver God's purposes. He is far greater than our decisions and our mistakes. Ponder Tonight The fear of getting a decision wrong often reveals a view of God as someone whose perfect plan is fragile enough to be disrupted by our imperfect choices. Psalm 32:8 presents a very different picture of a God who actively guides, teaches, and counsels His people. Decision-making in Scripture is relational rather than mechanical. It happens in the context of walking with God, seeking wise counsel, and following Jesus rather than searching for a formula that produces the guaranteed right answer. Wise counsel from a godly person is one of the primary ways God fulfills His promise to instruct and guide us. Seeking that counsel is not a sign of weak faith. It is wisdom in action. The question worth reframing tonight is not "what is the right choice?" but "am I walking closely enough with Jesus that I can trust Him to guide me through whichever path opens up?" Tonight's Scripture "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you." — Psalm 32:8, NIV Your Evening Prayer Lord, You know how often we second-guess ourselves when making decisions. We fear that we will somehow choose the wrong path and disrupt Your perfect plan. But You are far greater than our decisions and our mistakes. You promised to instruct us in the way we should go, and You keep Your promises. Increase our desire for a closer relationship with You, so that we seek You more than we seek the right answer. Help us trust that as we follow You, You will lead us where we need to be, and that Your loving eye is on us every step of the way. In Jesus' name, Amen. Want More?
