The shortage of Black librarians in the United States stems from a historical legacy of exclusion, limited access to quality education and professional development, the absence of visible role models and mentors, unconscious biases in recruitment processes, unequal salary structures, unwelcoming work environments, and broader systemic racism. These interconnected factors have led to a lack of representation within the field of librarianship, highlighting the need for proactive diversity initiatives, targeted outreach, educational support, and the dismantling of structural barriers to foster increased inclusion and equitable opportunities for Black individuals pursuing careers in librarianship. Shannon Bland is the Development Manager for the Charles County Public Library and a certified Professional Public Librarian in Maryland, she brings a decade of diverse experience to the table. From a dedicated Public Service Associate to a Branch Manager of both the smallest and largest branches, her journey is nothing short of remarkable. Her passion and commitment led her to earn a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Maryland in 2018. Notably, she was recognized as a finalist for the 2018 Innovative Librarians Award and honored as a Spectrum Scholar by the American Library Association. GSMC Classics: White Coolies GSMC Podcast Network White Coolies is an autobiographical record of the experiences of a group of Australian Army nursing sisters who became prisoners of the Japanese in WWII. A group of sixty-five Australian Army nursing sisters was evacuated from Malaya a few days before the fall of Singapore. Two days later their ship was bombed and sunk by the Japanese. Of the fifty-three survivors who scrambled ashore, twenty-one were murdered and the remaining thirty-two taken prisoner. White Coolies is the engrossing record kept by one of the sisters, Betty Jeffrey, during the more than three gruelling years of imprisonment that followed.
