Where Did Your Motivation Go? Why You’re Not Lazy!

from HOT AIR: Mental Health, Relationships, Dating & Pop Culture · host Joshua Robert: Podcaster | Mental Health, Relationships, Culture & Personal Growth

Why did you lose motivation—and how do you get motivated again without completely overhauling your life? We’re talking about motivation, discipline, habit formation and why even incredibly consistent people go through periods where their routines completely fall apart. Josh gets personal about a year where his workouts, eating habits, vitamins, sleep and nightly reading have all been less consistent than usual—and why constantly comparing himself to his most disciplined era was making the problem worse. We’re breaking down why motivation naturally rises and falls, the difference between motivation and habits, how novelty can make new routines feel exciting before they eventually become ordinary, and why changes in stress, schedule and environment can disrupt behaviors that once felt automatic. We also get into the trap of all-or-nothing thinking: missing one workout and deciding the entire week is ruined, eating differently for a few days and believing you’ve “fallen off,” or abandoning a creative project because you stopped feeling inspired. Research on motivation also gives us a more useful way to think about the problem. Self-determination theory, for example, emphasizes that motivation is influenced by experiences like autonomy, competence and connection rather than simply being something certain people permanently possess. Research has also found that responding to failure with self-compassion can actually support motivation to improve rather than automatically making people complacent. Finally, we’re getting practical: minimum viable habits, reducing friction, creating specific if-then plans, adjusting routines when life changes and learning how to return without turning your comeback into punishment. Research on implementation intentions supports the usefulness of these specific cue-based plans for turning intentions into action. Because consistency doesn’t mean doing something perfectly forever.
