Only four out of 25 large metropolitan areas enable workers to keep more purchasing power than their salaries imply: San Antonio, St. Louis, Charlotte, and Detroit. In San Antonio, the average salary of $57,700 translates to a purchasing power of about $61,580 due to lower living costs. St. Louis's average salary of $61,910 converts to a purchasing power of $64,289.
