Jerusalem had been destroyed, just as Jeremiah the Prophet had foretold. Those who remained in Jerusalem asked Jeremiah to give them the word of the Lord. He told them that the Lord was telling them to remain in Jerusalem where He would preserve and bless them. Despite their assurances to Jeremiah that they would obey the Lord, they didn't!
