While It Was Still Dark

John begins the resurrection account while it was still dark. Mary Magdalene finds the stone rolled away and runs to tell Peter and the beloved disciple, who race to the tomb and find the linen cloths lying in order. The disciples did not yet expect a resurrection, and their careful testimony to what they saw is all the more reliable. Light dawns on the first day of the week, as it did on the first day of creation: the risen Christ is the light of the world.
