Whitcoulls recommends James Patterson and Julia Haart
from The Sunday Session with Francesca Rudkin · host Newstalk ZB
Death of the Black Widow by James Patterson: thought it was time we gave the great (well, prolific at least) James Patterson a bit of an airing. This is the story of a femme fatale black widow type of monster who preys (mostly) on men; and is something of an escape artist as the police just can’t catch her. The cop in charge of the cases becomes obsessed with her but she’s a hard one to hunt down. Brazen by Julia Haart: this is one of my favourite books of the year so far. Memoir of an incredible woman who was brought up in an ultra-Orthodox Jewish family, and the details of what that life is like were unbelievable – I had no idea how circumscribed the lives of those women are. At the age of 43, she finally broke away and unleashed her extraordinary entrepreneurial talents and her life since then has been, well, also incredible. There is a Netflix series about her – I watched one episode which was enough, it’s all about the fabulous life she leads today – but the book gives the entire background about her life to that point and it’s wonderful.
