White Fragility Workshop Definition Clarification White Supremacy – White supremacy or white supremacism is a racist supremacist belief which maintains that white people are superior in many ways to people of other races, and that therefore, white people should be dominant over other races. White Supremacist – a person who believes that the white race is inherently superior to other races and that white people should have control over people of other races Racism – prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior. Racist – showing or feeling discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or believing that a particular race is superior to another. Institutional racism (also known as systemic racism) is a form of racism expressed in the practice of social and political institutions. Institutional racism is also racism by individuals or informal social groups,[1] governed by behavioral norms that support racist thinking and foment active racism. It is reflected in disparities regarding wealth, income, criminal justice, employment, housing, health care, political power and education, among other factors. White Fragility is a state in which even a minimum amount of racial stress becomes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive moves. These moves include the outward display of emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and behaviors such as argumentation, silence, and leaving the stress-inducing situation.
