White Jacket Chapter I - Preface and The Jacket

In which a resourceful sailor, lacking a proper coat, fashions a curious white jacket from an ordinary shirt, padding it with various scraps to brave the fierce Cape Horn weather. Though stout in appearance and bright as a ghostly apparition, this garment proves a woefully poor shield against the wet, absorbing rain with a relentlessness that turns it into a heavy burden.
