In which the white jacket, devised with innumerable pockets as a sailor’s private storehouse amidst the ceaseless bustle and lack of privacy aboard a man-of-war, is introduced with much pride and ingenuity. Yet despite its clever contrivances and comforts, the jacket’s wide reputation among the ship’s crafty denizens leads to a nocturnal theft, compelling the sailor to seal up most of its compartments and surrender the dream of secured personal space.
