But if we step back and look at the bigger picture, placing drivers in an environment with complex vehicle mixes, fragmented sidewalks, and unprotected intersections creates a system design with an extraordinarily low tolerance for error.While the world is leveraging automatic braking assistance (such as Japan's Sapo Car), strengthening medical evaluations, and building "forgiving road engineering" to protect seniors and pedestrians, Taiwan remains stuck in short-term political and administrative mindsets—redesigning an intersection is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and risks alienating voters, whereas adding another traffic light offers immediate political opticals.Managing elderly drivers isn't as simple as "rigidly revoking driver's licenses."
