Who Cares for Carers? Tackling Stigma at Work

A strong federal government push for social inclusion is encouraging people with disabilities and carers into the workforce. New research shows carers for the disabled tend to be in low paid, low skill, part-time jobs, and suggests stereotypes perpetuated by the media may be partly to blame. The number of carers is set to grow as Australia's population ages. Currently four in 10 are engaged in the workforce. Australian School of Business academic Hugh Bainbridge says it's time to start the conversations. There's plenty of room for improvement in considering carers at work at the individual, organisational and governmental levels.
