Who Do Other People Think You Are? - Episode 478

from Friends Talking Nerdy: A Mental Health Podcast · host Tee Kittle/Tim Jousma/Aubrey Baldwin

How much of who you are is actually shaped by the way other people see you?In Episode 478 of Friends Talking Nerdy, The Reverend Tracy and Tim The Nerd continue Self Month by turning their attention outward and exploring the psychology of social perception—the ways our relationships, communities, groups, and even strangers can influence how we understand ourselves. We begin with the looking-glass self, the idea that our self-image can be shaped by how we believe other people perceive and evaluate us. If we think others see us as intelligent, funny, awkward, successful, difficult, trustworthy, or unreliable, those perceptions can become part of the story we tell ourselves about who we are.But social perception doesn't stop with self-image. We examine impression management and the ways people consciously and unconsciously adjust their behavior depending on the audience and situation. Why do we behave differently at work than we do with friends or family? How much of that adaptation is normal social intelligence, and when does managing other people's perceptions begin to feel like we're performing a version of ourselves? The conversation expands into reputation and social roles, exploring how being labeled as “the responsible one,” “the funny one,” “the troublemaker,” “the smart one,” or “the dependable one” can influence both how others treat us and how we behave. Sometimes a role can provide belonging and purpose. Other times, it can become a box that's difficult to escape. We also explore social identity and group belonging. Humans naturally categorize themselves and others into groups, and those group memberships can become important parts of our identity. That can create connection, solidarity, and community—but it can also contribute to in-group favoritism, out-group bias, stereotyping, and division. From there, we dig into stereotype threat and the psychological consequences of being aware of a negative stereotype associated with a group to which we belong. What happens when we're not simply trying to perform well, but are also worried that our performance might confirm someone else's assumptions about people like us?Throughout the episode, The Reverend Tracy and Tim The Nerd examine the complicated relationship between who we are, who other people think we are, and who we believe we're supposed to be.Ultimately, Episode 478 asks a deceptively difficult question:If the people around you see you differently than you see yourself, who gets to decide which version is real?Maybe identity isn't created entirely from the inside out.Maybe part of becoming ourselves involves learning to understand the complicated mirror that other people hold up to us—while deciding which reflections deserve to become part of our story.Support Friends Talking Nerdy on Patreon. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song.
