Would you attribute it to a failure of activists to advocate for animal rights in conservative circles? I don't really have an answer for you about conservatives being particularly problematic, other than to say a lot of socially conservative folks live in smaller communities more closely attached to animal agriculture. There is also the fundamentalist Christianity connection and the unwillingness to question ideology.
