Who Killed Hiroyuki Muramoto? Reuters Cameraman Shot During Bangkok’s 2010 Red Shirt Protests

from Shadows of Siam: Where Smiles Meet Shadows · host Aku Bone Media

Reuters cameraman Hiroyuki Muramoto went to Bangkok to document Thailand’s 2010 Red Shirt protests. Two days after arriving from Tokyo, the 43-year-old husband and father was shot in the chest during the violent clashes of April 10.His final footage captured explosions, gunfire, wounded people, retreating soldiers, and a city losing control. It did not capture the person who fired the fatal round. The investigation first pointed toward an M16 fired from an army-held position. Months later, the official finding changed to an AK-47, reportedly based on a new review of photographs rather than a recovered bullet or matched weapon. In 2015, a Thai court concluded that the available evidence could not determine whether the shot came from soldiers, protesters, or another armed person. This episode follows Hiro’s life before Bangkok, the people who knew him as a gentle mentor and loving father, the final images inside his camera, the disputed investigation, and the unanswered question his wife Emiko and their two daughters were left to carry. This episode discusses political violence, gunfire, serious injury, and death.
