The Pilgrims, also known as the Pilgrim Fathers, were English settlers who came to North America on the Mayflower and established the Plymouth Colony in what is today Plymouth, Massachusetts. They were part of a religious congregations of Brownists, or Separatist Puritans, who had fled religious persecution in England.But did you know that these people were not actually called "Pilgrims" until many centuries later? And that the modern American holiday of Thanksgiving was moved by Franklin D. Roosevelt to increase the number of shopping days before Christmas?And that the first Thanksgiving wasn't all peace, love and pass the gravy? While the settlers at Plymouth and their allies from the Wampanoag tribe really did gather in 1621 for a three-day feast to celebrate the settlers' first successful harvest, that's far from the entire story.
