Why April 6th is the start of the UK tax year - I promise it's interesting!

from The Property Nomads Podcast · host Rob Smallbone & Aaron Devoy

This is a slightly quirky, but fascinating podcast from Rob. If you have ever wondered why the UK personal tax year starts on April 6th instead of January 1st as it does in so many other countries, Rob has the answer. It is more complex and interesting than you could ever imagine, it involves a pope, a king, and 11 lost days. At that time, the Julian calendar was used by the UK. Whereas Europe used the Gregorian calendar which aligned with the lunar year. After several hundred years of the UK using a different calendar, they were out of sync with Europe by 11 days. The treasury´s efforts to realign the UK with Europe is what created today´s tax year start. Just listen to the podcast to get the full story.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Most of the world, quite sensibly… chooses to have their taxes start on New Year´s Day.’ ‘March 25th, Ladies day that was the start of the new year (UK).’ ‘Everyone adopted the Gregorian calendar. However, England at the time did not do so.’   VALUABLE RESOURCES The Property Nomads Website  Buy to Let: How to Get Started – By Rob Smallbone (Amazon)   ABOUT THE HOST  Rob Smallbone the host of The Property Nomads Podcast, is on a global mission to guide your success.
