Yesterday, I sent him a message asking him if he feels as tired as I do after our talks. He assured me that he’s familiar with what I’m feeling and that it will get easier.Honestly, I felt like this when I first went to Peru. Back then it was a matter of learning how to navigate a completely new culture. I think what I’m going through now is that I’m forcing myself to face the truth of US culture. It’s taxing. But as Will said, I expect it will get easier. I eventually got to the point where I could fly to Peru without experiencing culture shock. Actually, I no longer experience culture shock no matter where I go. Once you become a citizen of the world, many of your frustrations and fears simply melt away.It is challenging to force ourselves to recognize the shortcomings of the USA, but we simply have to do it. I’m 50 now. I’m no longer vulnerable to being told, “You’ll understand when you’re older.”I knew the difference between right and wrong when I was six, and I still see the same problems today. I’ve been lied to all my life as have all of you.I’m really appreciative of people like Will and Simma for providing a community and a safe space to have an honest discussion about the challenges of our times. I hope all of you feel like you’re part of this community too. It sometimes feels like we’re making baby steps, but then one day you look up and you realize how far you’ve comeThanks to all of you for having the courage and fortitude and willingness to come on this journey with me!
