Why Are Pandas Endangered?

from The Curious World

Giant pandas are vulnerable animals native to central China that face ongoing survival challenges due to human-driven habitat fragmentation, infrastructure development, and livestock grazing in bamboo forests. Despite being classified as carnivores biologically, these bears rely on a specialized bamboo diet that provides very low nutritional energy, forcing them to spend the majority of their day eating and resting. Because their diet lacks sufficient calories to build up insulating fat reserves, pandas do not hibernate like other bears, instead migrating vertically up and down mountain slopes to find comfortable temperatures. Their conservation is further hindered by low reproductive rates, as females have extremely brief fertility windows and often abandon secondary cubs. Although wild populations have experienced some recovery thanks to government logging bans and nature reserves, researchers continue to advocate for habitat corridors to prevent genetic isolation among remaining panda groups.
