Why Baptize a Baby Right Away? (The Patrick Madrid Show)

On The Patrick Madrid Show, a caller named Teresa asked Patrick Madrid how to respond to those who want to delay Baptism. Patrick responded by taking the conversation straight to the heart of what the sacrament is and why infant Baptism matters so much. Patrick explained that Baptism is not just a family tradition or a symbolic gesture. It is the sacrament Jesus gave us for new life in grace. Because we are all born marked by original sin, Baptism brings the soul into the life of God in a real and necessary way. As Patrick pointed out, Jesus Himself spoke clearly about the need to be reborn "by water and the Holy Spirit.” That is why the Church encourages parents to baptize their children as soon as possible. A child may not yet understand what is happening, but that does not make the gift any less real. Patrick compared it to circumcision in the Old Covenant: parents acted on behalf of the child, and God truly worked through that act. In a similar way, parents bring their child to Jesus through Baptism. Teresa also asked what happens if a child dies before being baptized. Patrick answered with both clarity and compassion. The child is not punished for personal sin, because an infant has committed none. At the same time, the Church has not declared with certainty what happens in every such case. Instead, Catholics entrust these children to the mercy of God and have every reason to hope in His love. The takeaway is simple and urgent: Baptism is a precious gift, not something to put off.
