Why Capsule Count Is the Wrong Number to Compare

from The Sunny Side by SOLEY · host SOLEY

How many capsules should a supplement bottle have? It is the wrong question, and this episode is the arithmetic that makes half an aisle look different. A capsule count is a count of objects. It is not a size, it is not an amount, and it cannot be compared between two bottles until you know two more things: how many capsules make a serving, and how many servings a day. Count, divided by capsules per serving, divided by servings a day, gives days of supply — the only number on which two bottles are honestly comparable. A 300-capsule bottle at 3 a day is 100 days. A 120-capsule bottle at 2 a day is 60 servings, which is 60 days. The front panels say 300 against 120, sounding like two and a half times as much. The real answer is 100 days against 60. Serving size and servings per container sit at the top of a Supplement Facts panel, above every ingredient line, and are the most-skipped lines on it. Every milligram figure underneath depends on them, which is why a milligram number with no serving attached is a decoration rather than a fact. Then Cathy accuses the episode of being an alibi — arithmetic arriving at the conclusion that a 120-capsule bottle is fine. Rupert concedes and states the part he would be expected to leave out: a bottle running 100 days genuinely beats a 60-day bottle on the thing people feel, and if reordering twice as often breaks a routine, buy the longer one from someone else.
