Why Child Behavior Is Not A Diagnosis - "Your Eyes Don't See What Your Mind Can't Think" but Dr Maya AI Can

from The Dr Maya Way

“Your eyes cannot see what your mind has not learned to look for.”This is particularly relevant when we assess a child. If we see poor concentration, delayed speech, unusual behaviour or learning difficulties and quickly label the child as having ADHD, autism or another disorder, we may describe what is visible without understanding what is happening underneath. When I began validating my creation, Dr Maya AI, I listened to parents describe years of concerns, consultations, investigations and therapies. Many were still struggling in silence. Their stories suggested that important clues had sometimes become fragmented between appointments, while the child accumulated labels, referrals and interventions without anyone reconstructing the complete history.A paediatrician may refer a child for speech therapy, psychological assessment, occupational therapy or behavioural therapy. These services can be extremely valuable. The problem arises when referral becomes the endpoint rather than part of a continuing search for the underlying explanation. Therapy may help a child function better, but it should not stop us asking: Why did this problem develop? Was there regression? Could pain, sleep disturbance, hearing difficulty, infection, neurological disease, medication effects, emotional distress or another physical problem be contributing? This is the weakness I describe as doctor-centred care: the professional examines one part of the problem, makes a decision and passes the child to the next service. The parent and child move through the system, but the complete story may never move with them. For children with complex developmental, behavioural or physical difficulties, that fragmentation can have lifelong consequences. The goal should not simply be to help a child cope with a label. It should be to understand the child well enough to give them the best possible opportunity to communicate, learn, become independent and participate fully in life. That is why I created Dr Maya AI and later expanded its colour-coded system. The aim is to put the child’s story back at the centre of care—connecting observations from parents, teachers, doctors, psychologists and therapists before deciding what the problem is and what should happen next. The question should not be, “What label can we give this child?” It should be, “What happened to this child, what are we missing, and how can we help?”
