Why Church - Why Do I Need to Grow in Generosity

The Psalmist said: “The earth and everything in it, the world and its inhabitants, belong to the LORD;” (Psalm 24:1, CSB). Throughout Scripture, God is seen as the owner, while we are given a little time and a little opportunity to manage his resources. When you recognize whose stuff it is that you manage, it is changes everything: attitude, behavior, and habits—at a very profound level. Anyone remember a magazine called The Reader’s Digest? One of their stories was about a traveler between flights in an airport who went to a lounge and bought a small package of cookies. Then she sat down and began reading a newspaper. Gradually, she became aware of a rustling noise from behind her paper. She was flabbergasted to see a neatly dressed man helping himself to her cookies! Not wanting to make a scene, she leaned over and took a cookie herself, hoping he would get the idea. A minute or two passed and then came more rustling. He was helping himself to another cookie! She was so angry she did not dare allow herself to say anything. Then, as if to add insult to injury, the man broke the final remaining cookie in two, pushed half across to her, ate the other half and left. She couldn’t believe the nerve of this guy! As she was fuming over what had just happened, the woman’s flight was announced. So she opened her handbag to get her ticket, and to her shocking embarrassment, there in her purse was her pack of unopened cookies! When she came to grips with who really owned those cookies, it changed the whole story, didn’t it? Scripture says God is the owner of everything. His cookies, His savings, His house, His 401K.
