Why Church - Why Do I Need to Serve Others or Have a Ministry

Almost 10 years ago I was asked to take the Coffee Team and turn it into a Coffee Ministry. The goal was to learn everything I needed to know to help them move in the direction leadership wanted them to go. Many changes were needed to be made, or things added new, to make this happen. And this is where my serving story begins. As I was learning all that the Coffee Team had done and was doing. I put myself in their shoes and joined the team so I could understand first hand. After a few months, I let the team know I was going to handle a whole Sunday by myself to see if some of my thoughts felt right. What happened next was a big learning moment for me. At the end of that Sunday, I wanted to get home to my family, but clean up needed to happen, and it was taking too long. At this time, we had added all new equipment to help us handle how many people and services we were offering coffee to. Being the first Sunday with all of this new equipment, it was taking me way longer to clean up than I liked. I started to get frustrated and impatient. At the sink where I cleaned the coffee pots, God stepped in and showed me my heart. He showed me that I didn’t have a heart to serve the team, that I wasn’t acting like a servant. No one knew but me and Him. He started to change my heart and help me see from their eyes, such as time commitment, what I was truly asking of them, and to be grateful for these team members giving their lives to serve the church in this way. Here are some key take aways I learned as I helped that team move into a ministry: • Serving is an example of Jesus • We are saved for a purpose, not just a location • God designed the church to function through service • Serving others changes us • Serving is how we obey the Great Commission Join us this Sunday as we dive into these five points deeper.
