Why Churches Can’t Replace SNAP

Could churches replace SNAP if government food assistance disappeared? The 2025 reconciliation law changed SNAP eligibility, work requirements and state cost-sharing. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that its SNAP provisions will reduce federal spending by $187 billion relative to previous projections through 2034.
