Why Conservatives Are Obsessed with Trans People

There is something strange happening in American politics.The loudest voices on the right are not talking about inflation, or crime, or healthcare. They are talking about trans people. Specifically, trans athletes. Trans bathrooms. Trans children. Trans existence.The obsession is relentless. And it is not random.In psychoanalytic theory, reaction formation is a defense mechanism in which emotions, desires, and impulses that are anxiety-producing or unacceptable to the ego are mastered by exaggerating the directly opposing tendency. In plain terms: when people cannot face something inside themselves, they attack it loudly in others.Sigmund Freud identified this pattern more than a century ago. He claimed that men who are prejudiced against homosexuals are making a defense against their own homosexual feelings by adopting a harsh anti-homosexual attitude, which helps convince them of their heterosexuality.That was a theory. Then someone tested it.In 1996, psychologist Henry Adams at the University of Georgia put 64 self-identified heterosexual men in a lab and measured their physical arousal while they watched adult content of different kinds. The men had been divided into two groups based on their scores on a standardized homophobia scale.While there was no difference in response when the men were exposed to heterosexual and lesbian content, there was a major difference when they were exposed to gay male content. 54% of the men who scored highest on the homophobia scale showed measurable physical arousal. Among the non-homophobic men, that figure was 24%.More than half of the most homophobic men in the study were physically responding to gay content. While telling the world they found it repulsive.Shakespeare captured this dynamic centuries before psychology named it: “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”Reaction formation is considered a diagnostic signal when the behavior is exaggerated, compulsive, and inflexible. Reactive emotion protests too much. It is overdone, extravagant, showy. It cannot adapt to changing circumstances the way genuine emotions do. It must be constantly on display, as if any failure to exhibit it would expose the contrary feeling underneath.Sound familiar?The politicians who legislate against trans people do not move on to other topics. They return to it obsessively. They introduce bill after bill. They give speech after speech. They cannot leave it alone because the anxiety driving the behavior is never actually resolved. Attacking others does not make the internal conflict go away. It only requires escalation to maintain the illusion.This is why the men who scream loudest about protecting children from trans people turn out, with disturbing frequency, to be the ones children actually needed protection from. This is why the most vocally anti-gay legislators keep getting caught in situations that reveal exactly what they claimed to be fighting.Reaction formation can temporarily reduce emotional distress, but it often leads to deeper problems. People who rely on it may come across as insincere, confusing, or even hypocritical. Long-term reaction formation makes it increasingly difficult to recognize and accept one’s own true feelings.The anger is real. The shame driving it is real. The target is not.Trans people are not the problem these men are trying to solve.
