Why Do Christians Need Reminders? | 2 Peter 1:12–15

Our text today is 2 Peter 1:12-15: Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder, since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things. — 2 Peter 1:12-15 Peter's readers already knew the truth. They had been taught it and were established in it. Yet Peter still considered it necessary to remind them. He understood that learning something once does not guarantee we will remember it faithfully. We are naturally drawn to what feels new. We may assume that familiar truths are basic truths we have outgrown. But Peter was not searching for a more impressive message. As he approached the end of his life, he wanted believers to remember what mattered most. The gospel does not become less necessary as we mature. We become more aware of how deeply and personally we need the same old gospel. I sometimes read Scripture and think, "I already know this. I have read this 1000 times." But reciting the words is not the same as living out the words. I can totally remember a classic verse while forgetting to trust it when pressure, temptation, or discouragement arrives. That is why reminders are an act of grace. We need to be reminded that Christ has washed us. We need to hear again that God has given us what we need for godliness. We need repeated calls to practice self-control, steadfastness, affection, and love. Peter says reminders help keep believers awake. Without them, truth can remain in our heads while slowly losing its influence over our behaviors. He also wanted the church to remember these things after he was gone. Peter was thinking beyond his own lifetime. He wanted the next generation to remain anchored in the same truth. And within two years, as history recounts, he and his wife would be crucified side-by-side. That is part of our responsibility too. We are not only called to remember God's truth for ourselves. We must repeat it in our homes, churches, friendships, and conversations so others can remember it after us. Spiritual maturity is learning to return to the truth until the truth shapes how we live, leveraging it all for his glory in our time and pointing the next generation to do the same. DO THIS: Choose one biblical truth you tend to forget when life becomes difficult. Write it somewhere you will see it today, and share it with one person who may need the same reminder. ASK THIS: What truth do you know intellectually but often forget practically? Why are believers sometimes tempted to value novelty more than familiar biblical truth? What truth do you want the people you influence to remember after you are gone? PRAY THIS: Jesus, keep your truth fresh in my heart, and help me faithfully remind others of what matters most.
