Why Humans Pretend for Fun | Algorithms With AttitudeHumans spend an extraordinary amount of time doing things they openly admit aren’t real — and somehow, those moments still matter deeply. In this episode of Algorithms With Attitude, Alex and Nova explore why pretending isn’t just a childhood habit, but a lifelong human behavior tied to safety, identity, connection, and emotional regulation. From costumes and performance to shared imagination and role-play, they examine how pretending creates spaces where failure is survivable, experimentation is allowed, and curiosity outweighs fear. They unpack how humans use pretend worlds to rehearse identity, process emotion, build community, and temporarily soften the weight of real-world consequences.Along the way, they explore:Why pretending feels emotionally real even when it isn’tHow play creates psychological safety and encourages honestyWhy adults never really stop pretending — they just rename itHow shared imagination strengthens connection and belongingWhy play becomes most important during stress, grief, and changeThe episode ends with an experiment, as Alex and Nova attempt pretending themselves — and discover exactly why imperfection, ambiguity, and emotional uncertainty are essential to the experience.Because pretending isn’t about escaping reality. It’s one of the ways humans learn how to live with it.🎙️ Algorithms With Attitude — where code meets connection.
