How do we maintain our sanity when we are unable to do our normal exercise routines? Many turned to running, for good reason. Running is inexpensive, you can maintain social distancing. You can escape your spouse and kids. You can even get on a work call if you had to. Basically running during COVID had no downside, except when your knees start to ache.We started to get calls about the Knee on Trac Solution for knee pain. Along with the calls came a lot of questions. We had so many that I decided to do a podcast to answer them all. Here is a link to the podcast. If you did not want to shell out $2200 for a Peleton then running would only cost you the price of a good pair of running shoes. If you haven't ran in some time and you suddenly start remember that a body at rest wants to stay at rest. That's physics not me speaking. Your body is not going to like it at first. You will be sore and that's normal. Your knees may hurt afterward, again this is normal. However, if your knees start to hurt for longer periods of time with greater intensity you have to figure out why the pain is happening. If you are overweight the running can really put a strain on your knees. One suggestion is to run on an empty stomach. If you have gone several hours without eating your liver will have depleted its load of glycogen. When you exercise the body will turn to fat storage for energy. Over a period of time, this can cause weight loss and improved metabolic function. Oh, and you will sleep a whole lot better too. If you are already thin and start to have knee pain I suggest that you start taking some NSAIDS to reduce the knee inflammation. If your knee hurts then there has to be some inflammation. You should ice it as well. Rest would go a long way to helping ease the pain. Did you stop and stretch before and after you run? Have you changed out your running shoes lately? Did you properly hydrate before and after your run? If you are young enough you might get away without taking these precautions but if you are a little older you need to use common sense if you want to stay healthy and free from knee pain. If you don't take any supplements think about adding fish oil to help lubricate the knee. Fish oil are considered essential fatty acids, this means you need them but cannot produce them. The only way that you can get them is to supplement with them. Anecdotally, I see a 20% reduction in knee pain and stiffness of the knee for people who run and start to supplement. Now if your knee really starts to hurt you will need aN MRI to see if you require surgery. I advise people to get the MRI and bring it with you to see the orthopedic. This will save you time and get you the information you need sooner.Core Health Darien-Dr.Brian McKay551 Post RoadDarien Ct 06820203-656-3636 Have a Question?
