Why Does It Feel Like Everyone Else Is Ahead
from The Path to Happiness Hosted by Adam Hunt
Ever look around and feel like everybody else somehow got a head start on life? Someone you went to school with just bought a house. A friend got promoted. Somebody’s getting married, traveling the world, starting a business, or posting another picture that makes their life look suspiciously well put together. Meanwhile, you’re sitting there wondering, “Am I supposed to be further along by now?” In this episode of The Path to Happiness, I talk about that uncomfortable feeling of being “behind”—and why comparing your life to somebody else’s can mess with your head so quickly. We’ll talk about the invisible timelines we pick up along the way: when we think we’re supposed to have the career figured out, find the right relationship, own a home, make a certain amount of money, or finally feel like we know what we’re doing. But we’ll also dig into something a little deeper: sometimes comparison isn’t really about wanting somebody else’s life. Sometimes it’s showing us something that’s missing in our own. Maybe you don’t actually want their job—you want more meaning in yours. Maybe you don’t want their vacation—you’re exhausted and desperately need some fun. Maybe seeing someone else move forward reminds you that there’s something you’ve been wanting to change. Instead of using comparison as evidence that you’re failing, what if you could use it as information? We’ll talk about figuring out what you genuinely want, separating your own goals from the things you feel like you’re supposed to want, and taking one realistic step toward your life instead of trying to “catch up” to everybody else. Because there’s no universal timeline you’re supposed to be following. You’re not trying to build everybody else’s life. You’re trying to build yours.
