Why Emerging Managers are the Next Big Investment Frontier | Lincoln Archibald
from The Fortunate FISHES Podcast · host Charlie Garcia
The data is not ambiguous. Smaller funds, first funds, second funds outperform. They still get a fraction of the dollars.Charlie Garcia sits down with Lincoln Archibald, managing partner of Fund Launch Partners. Lincoln has screened over 3,000 emerging managers in the past two and a half years and partners with about twenty per fund across venture, private equity, real estate, real assets and private credit. He does not buy their funds. He buys five to fifteen percent of their management companies, in perpetuity.Three Main Functions Of A Firm:→ Raise money→ Do deals→ Everything else — administration, operations, compliance, audit readinessLeg three is what kills people. Managers were arriving having already spent half a million dollars on setup with zero subscribed LPs. So Fund Launch interviewed roughly a hundred law firms and negotiated bulk pricing, then did the same for administration and compliance. Clients started offering equity to get Lincoln on the team, and he said no. Two years later those same managers were running 200 and 400 million dollars. The model changed.Minimum Viable First Close:→ Twenty percent of target before you launch — ten million on a fifty million dollar fund→ Two years of personal runway before you take a paycheck→ Two percent GP commitment, every fund, not just the first oneWhy this matters at this level: the average net operating margin on a fund management company runs forty to fifty percent, fee income compounds across vintages while headcount stays flat, and the allocator bias against fund one is a pricing inefficiency rather than a risk signal. Lincoln also makes the case for the family structure — fund your kids' fund one, sit on the investment committee, let them build a real track record with real economics. For the operator whose second act is managing other people's money, and the allocator still paying up for fund fifteen.More on Lincoln and his firm: https://www.fundlaunchpartners.com/Subscribe for more insights from leaders redefining what it means to be truly wealthy.
