This video is brought to you by Nebula. Today, Nigel Farage returns to UK frontline politics, the US votes to sanction the International Criminal Court, and Germany vows to get tougher on deportations. From TLDR News, this is your daily briefing for Thursday the 6th of June, 2024. In our main story today, we're going to have a look at the effect of Nigel Farage's return to frontline politics.

While Farage has undeniably had a big effect on UK politics in the last 10 years, in the last couple of years he's opted to take a back seat. Although he is a member and honorary chairman of the Reform UK party, he didn't lead it and often took a back seat when it came to press conferences. However, on Monday, Farage announced that he'd come to a mutual agreement with Richard Tice, the Reform party leader, for them to effectively switch jobs. So Tice has now become the honorary chairman and Farage has become leader of the party.

Additionally, Farage announced that he would be standing for election himself, in the seaside constituency of Clapton. Now, it appears that Farage does stand a good chance of being elected in this constituency. Previously, it elected a UKIP MP, a party Farage previously helmed, and polling from January showed that if Farage were to run, then he'd likely win, beating the Conservative challenger. Now, while many are interested in whether Farage himself will sit on the green benches in Parliament, others are far more interested in whether Reform UK will cause any real and sustained damage to the Conservative party.

Even prior to Farage's return, Reform were polling at between 10 and 12%. So considering that the Tories were polling in the low 20s, this alone was bad news. The polling, though, has only got worse for the Tories since Farage's intervention. The latest YouGov poll put the Conservatives on only 19%, and Reform on 17%.

Now, it is worth noting that YouGov has changed their methodology, meaning that this poll is not directly comparable to their previous polls. However, had they continued to use their previous methodology, the situation would have only looked even worse for the Tories, with them level with Reform on 18%. Now, there is still a few weeks until the election itself, and we'll likely see the polls move around a bit more in that time. But no matter how you look at it, the Conservatives are in a very tricky position.

We'll have to see whether any major improvements are made in the next few weeks. There's more on the way, but remember to subscribe and ring the bell for more daily briefing tomorrow. House of Representatives, controlled by the Republicans, has passed the Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act, aiming to sanction the International Criminal Court, or the ICC prosecutors. These new proposed sanctions come after ICC prosecutors, including the lead prosecutor Karim Khan, sought arrest warrants for top Israeli officials over alleged war crimes in Gaza. The Israeli officials include Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, but also three Hamas leaders. The vote demonstrates the continued unconditional support for Israel among U.S.

lawmakers. It's also largely symbolic, because the U.S. and Israel aren't ICC members, so they can actually ignore any issued warrants. The Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said in a statement, The U.S.

firmly stands with Israel and refuses to allow international bureaucrats to basically issue arrest warrants to Israeli leadership for false crimes. However, this bill isn't supported by everyone, and it's actually quite unlikely that it will even be passed. President Joe Biden has expressed his opposition to the sanctions against the ICC, arguing they were going too far, to which Netanyahu said he was surprised and disappointed in an interview on Sunday. With Biden's opposition, the bill is unlikely to be passed by the Senate, which is narrowly controlled by Biden's Democrats.

And it likely won't also pass the final hurdle, the White House itself. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said the country will toughen its deportation rules, so that the glorification of terrorist offenses is grounds for deportation. It comes after a series of knife attacks across the country, including a fatal one in Mannheim last Friday, after which a 25-year-old Afghan asylum seeker was detained on suspicion of repeatedly stabbing a police officer. The spike in violence comes as Germany prepares to hold the European Parliament elections this week, as well as municipal elections in seven states.

On Tuesday evening, a candidate for the far-right alternative for Deutschland party was also injured after allegedly chasing after a man tearing down election posters, who then cut him with a knife. Scholz's center-left cabinet has since come under pressure to address concerns over crime and immigration, with the Chancellor telling the Bundestag this morning, Anyone who glorifies terrorism is against all our values and should be deported. He added that the German Interior Ministry was working to enable the deportation of criminals and dangerous migrants back to Afghanistan. Now over to some big news in the world of tech and AI.

NVIDIA has surpassed Apple to become the world's second most valuable company, void by demand for its AI chips. Its shares rose about 5% at a market capitalization of $3.01 trillion, which is marginally ahead of Apple's $3 trillion. Investors and tech firms like Google, Microsoft, and Meta have flocked to investing heavily in NVIDIA's chips, spending billions of dollars, and presently there seems to be no indication that these firms will be looking to slow down their shopping spree in the near future. With AI dominating the tech world, NVIDIA's AI-centric data chips have led to exceptional growth.

By mid-2023, its market cap had more than doubled to a trillion dollars, surpassing Meta and Tesla. Then on February the 21st, NVIDIA's blockbuster earnings report, where the company announced a 265% jump in revenues, pushed it above 2 trillion, making NVIDIA the third most valuable listed company in the US, behind only Apple and Microsoft, but ahead of giants like Amazon and Alphabet. This represented a single day gain of $277 billion, the largest in Wall Street history, and now it's even managed to surpass Apple. Despite competition from rivals, namely AMD, which has produced a chip that's generally considered better than NVIDIA's equivalent, NVIDIA still continues to lead the global AI tech race.

Capitalizing hard on the AI boom, CEO Jensen Huang has promised a steady flow of new chips, and NVIDIA's Blackwell products are expected to generate substantial revenue this year. Now in today's uplifting story, we discuss new sound shirts developed by Newcastle United sponsor Seller, alongside the Royal National Institute for Deaf People, which allow deaf football fans to physically feel the atmosphere of live matches. The shirts work by using microphones placed around the Newcastle stadium, St. James's Park, to pick up noises of the crowd.

This data is then transmitted wirelessly to shirts equipped with haptic technology, the same tech used in mobile phone touchscreens, to recreate stadium noise as touch sensation. Amazingly, it covers a range of reactions too, as haptics on different areas of the shirt correspond to different crowd reactions. For example, vibrations in the shirt sleeves mean the home team is singing, while buzzing in the back of the shirt signifies an away goal. One of the first people to try out the new tech, Lifetime Newcastle fan Ryan Gregson, said, For the first time, I felt included 100%.

To experience the noise through vibration was just wonderful. It's hoped that the technology will be rolled out across different football clubs in future, helping to make live sports more accessible to deaf fans and people with hearing loss.
