Why Germany is yet to apologise for Namibia genocide

from Sunday Extra - Separate stories podcast Hosted by Australian Broadcasting Corporation

The German Reich was the colonial power in what is now Namibia from 1884 to 1915. In 2021, the German Government officially acknowledged “atrocities … that, from today's perspective, would be called genocide”. From 1904 to 1908, German colonial rulers waged a war of extermination against the Herero and Nama people in order to install a German settler colony. And although in 2021, the German government accepted “a moral, historical, and political obligation to tender an apology for this genocide”, a Green Party motion on 14 October calling for that apology did not pass the Bundestag. Guest: Professor Jürgen Zimmerer, Professor of Global History at Hamburg University and an expert on Germany’s colonial history in Africa.
