Why I Want To Live Off Grid

from The Common Sense Practical Prepper · host Keith Vincent

Send us Fan MailThe email sounded simple: “Why do you want to live off grid?” My answer isn’t a manifesto and it isn’t a sales pitch. It’s a clear look at why I’m not retreating from the world, I’m choosing how I want to spend the years I’ve got left. I’m tired of the constant noise, the endless hot takes, and the way volume keeps replacing substance. Distance is the most effective volume knob I have, and the mountains don’t demand a side, an opinion, or a performance.I break down why 50 to 100 acres isn’t a “compound” to me, it’s a buffer. It’s sight lines, space, and the ability to decide when I interact and when I don’t. I also explain why East Tennessee is high on my list for practical prepper reasons: a long growing season for a serious garden, enough elevation to dodge the worst heat, abundant water from rain, springs, and streams, and land that can still be affordable in the mountain counties. Then there’s the money side of preparedness: Tennessee’s no state income tax can keep more retirement income in your pocket, and that turns into the real necessities like firewood, seeds, property tax, and keeping a truck running. We also get into what the land can actually do: hardwoods for heat, room to hunt, space for a half-acre garden, and the option to build layered systems like solar plus micro hydro if the creek flow and drop are right. For communications and outages, I want tools that work when networks don’t: Starlink and a proper ham radio base station with HF, VHF, and UHF. I’m honest about the tradeoffs too, giving up convenience and nearby help to gain self-reliance and quiet by choice.
