Why India is threatening to cut water supplies to Pakistan

from Late Night Live - Separate stories podcast · host Australian Broadcasting Corporation

After a terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir in 2025, tensions between India and Pakistan exploded into a four-day war, with the threat of nuclear war prompting international intervention. In retaliation for the attack India suspended a key water treaty, threatening to cut Pakistan’s water supplies off by building a series of hydro-electric dams which can divert water away from Pakistan. Pakistan has threatened nuclear retaliation if it goes ahead. Meanwhile Australia has signed a new deal with India which allows Australia to start exporting uranium to the country. Indian PM Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Australia also secured increased cooperation on defence and security, including counter-terrorism measures.Guest: : Michael Kugelman, senior fellow for South Asia at the Atlantic Council, and writer of Foreign Policy magazine’s weekly South Asia Brief. Producer: Catherine Zengerer
