Why is the Ocean Blue? Several students have submitted this question to Untamed Science, so we've decided to take on the challenge of answering it. It all has to do with physics and the way light reflects off of objects and the way light is absorbed by water. Basically long red wavelengths are absorbed first in the water column. What this episode covers
The ocean looks blue because red, orange and yellow (long wavelength light) are absorbed more strongly by water than is blue (short wavelength light). So when white light from the sun enters the ocean, it is mostly the blue that gets returned. Same reason the sky is blue.
