Why Joe Rogan Keeps Going Back

In October 2024, Joe Rogan gave Donald Trump three hours on the most listened to podcast in the world. The interview got 40 million views on YouTube alone. Trump’s own team called it the crowning achievement of their entire media strategy. Rogan endorsed Trump the next day.Then Trump took office.Rogan watched what happened and he did not stay quiet. He called the ICE raids horrific and heartless. He said the Iran war was insane and that Trump’s own supporters felt betrayed. He called MAGA supporters unintelligent dorks. For a moment it looked like Rogan was done.Then Trump invited him to the Oval Office.With Rogan standing directly behind him, Trump signed an executive order on psychedelics. Rogan smiled for the cameras. And just like that he was back.To understand why, you need to know about a psychological concept called trauma bonding.Psychologist Patrick Carnes first described it in his 1997 book The Betrayal Bond. He defined trauma bonding as a bond that forms when cycles of reward and hurt cause a person to become deeply attached to the one causing them harm. Carnes was writing about romantic relationships and abusive households. But the mechanism is identical regardless of context.The cycle always looks the same. You give everything. They hurt you. They pull back just enough to make you feel the loss. Then they give you just enough to bring you back in. And the bond gets stronger every time because now you have more invested. Now you have more to justify.This is why people stay in relationships that are clearly hurting them. Not because they are stupid. Not because they do not see what is happening. But because the reward, when it comes, feels like proof that it was all worth it.For Rogan the reward was the Oval Office. A signed executive order. A cause he actually believes in. Trump knew exactly what Rogan wanted and he gave it to him at precisely the right moment.And then he called him a liberal in front of the cameras.That detail matters. Trump did not give Rogan the moment privately. He made sure everyone watching knew that Rogan was the junior partner. That Trump was doing Rogan a favor. That the power in this relationship has always had one address.Rogan went home and kept criticizing the Iran war. He has not stopped. He still calls himself politically homeless. He still says things that would get anyone else on Trump’s enemies list destroyed.But he went back. And that is the whole story.Rogan gave Trump the White House. Trump gave him a photo op and called him a liberal. That is not a partnership. That is a toxic relationship. And until Rogan sees it for what it is, he will keep going back for more.The two oldest lies in every toxic relationship are always the same.But he really loves me.He has changed now.He has not changed.
