Why Journalists are Leaving the Newsroom to Join the Creator Economy
from The Sidebar by NYABJ
Over the past few years, there's been an increase in journalists leaving their roles in a traditional newsroom to create their own news content on TikTok, Substack, or a podcast. They are joining what's being called the creator economy: people using various platforms to monetize their content. In this episode, we find out why journalists are leaving secure jobs to create their own content. We also learn about some academic programs helping to transition journalists into the creator economy. We dig into some of the challenges these journalists face. We are speaking with LINDSAY GIBBS, the founder of Power Plays; JEREMY CAPLAN, from the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at The City University of New York; and JAZMIN GOODWIN, a journalist joining the creator economy. Go to www.powerplays.news to subscribe to the Power Plays newsletter. In addition, you can learn more about CUNY's Entrepreneurial Journalism Creators program at www.journalism.cuny.edu/j-plus/entrepreneurial-journalism-creators-program/ --------- The opinions heard in this episode belong to the individuals who made them and not to NYABJ.
