Why Michigan Will Have College Football's Best Defense In 2023 | Michigan Football 2023

The Michigan Wolverines will have College Football's best defense this year because they have elite assistant coaches, a masterful defensive coordinator, and hungry, experienced players who also have a high ceiling. Michigan's defense last year was Top 10 in several categories, most notably finishing 7th in points allowed per game (16.1 Opp Pts/G), 5th in yards allowed per game (292.1 Yards/G), and 5th in defensive passing efficiency (107.58). Michigan had a defensive tackle drafted in the 1st round in Mazi Smith, and defensive end Mike Morris and cornerback DJ Turner received All-Big Ten honors in 2022 and were also drafted in the 2023 NFL Draft. Michigan returns all but one of their defensive coaches from last year, with defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, defensive line coach Mike Elston, and defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale all returning. Jim Harbaugh's crew finished Top 10 in several defensive categories last year. Most notably, the Wolverines were 7th in points allowed per game (16.1 Opp Pts/G), 5th in yards allowed per game (292.1 Yds/G), and 5th in defensive passing efficiency (107.58 RTG). Michigan returns elite, NFL-level players in defensive tackle Kris Jenkins, cornerback Will Johnson, and safety Rod Moore. They also bring back All-Big Ten players Jaylen Harrell, Junior Colson, Michael Barrett, and Mike Sainristil. Defensive end Braiden McGregor, defensive tackles Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant, linebacker Ernest Hausmann, and safety Makari Paige are just a short list of the numerous breakout candidates this defense has. Ohio State, Iowa, Penn State, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota are Big Ten teams who will contend to have the best defense in the nation. Outside of the Big Ten, Florida State, Alabama, LSU, and Georgia will also contend for College Football's best defense, and they have their own sets of unicorn players that will take the field this fall. Michigan Football will win it all in 2023 thanks to an elite offense, but also a defense that is built to win championships.
