Depression is a motherfucker. You have options. Go to mentalhealth.gov to learn more or call 1-800-273-8255 if you need immediate help. My name is Joshua Gilmore from the NoRCalifornia and Ectopod Podcast.

You are not alone. You are now entering NoRCalifornia. If you love what you hear, you can find us on your favorite podcast search engines and subscribe. And also, if you don't mind, leave us a like or review.

And if hearing us is not enough, you can always get your NoRCalifornia fix by going to noRCalifornia.com. And you can send your Fox ideas or some random bullshit, your email which is noRuntersportCalifornia.gov. Don't forget, we are NoRCalifornia. Ideas from everywhere, voices from noR since 2001.

Previously on NoRCalifornia. What the fuck, man? How is it that you find one absolutely way worse than your previous? I don't get it.

First you may be sent to the Apple, which has actually kind of grown on me a little bit. But then you put me through with that fucking shit, and crawled with a wicked prayer. And now cats, Jesus Christ, I barely made it through that one. Good thing I'm high.

Good thing I'm high. Good thing I'm high. That's beside the point. I'll quit being so jellical.

Oh, fucking. I don't get it. Don't get to be able to juice. Fill gets spruched.

What the fuck? What do I come to? Do you want to do a commentary on Ready Player One? Oh, you do care.

Yeah, let's do that. I'm sorry. This is Josh. This is Nick.

And finally, I kicked my redemption song. Hey, hey, hey, hey. We talked about no, no cooking, no. I'm passing the don't channel left hand side.

Can't we stop eating the dead horse? I got it. I got it. No, we're getting high before the podcast.

I got it. Oh, anyways, we're doing another commentary because we're doing a... Wait, wait, wait, wait. Terri, ready player one?

Someone's excited. I'm super excited about this. I'm excited too because with everything going on the world before we get into our bullshit, no matter when this is being posted, hopefully you're happy, safe, healthy, and all that fun stuff and just enjoying hearing our bullshit again. Yeah.

Yeah. That's why something's up. It's accurate. Yeah.

Rosh it in hand. Don't touch your face. Yeah. Stay home for God's sake.

Please fucking God. Anyways, we are going to be doing a commentary for Ready Player One when we came out in 2018 based on the book by Ernest Cline. Yeah. It's almost, I'm going to say it's like a nerd Bible.

Well, it's hailed as the holy grail of pop culture. Yeah. It's because of so many references and the film, I had to applaud it for what it's worth. You know, like, I love this movie.

Seriously, when we do this commentary, it's going to seem like we have to write because there's going to be multiple times where we're going to go, Oh, there's a sheer volume of crap that they put into the book. That most of them were probably going to have an aneurysm. Oh, yeah. I had read the book and watching the movie last night for my first time in preparation.

Even I was noticing, Lillie's story's here and they're not understanding the movie itself where it was going. Yeah, it's, and that's really kind of the key when you're watching the film. If you've read the book, which like, I know you haven't, but if you've read the book, there's descriptive things and stuff like that. There's no way they could have put into this stuff.

Oh, yeah. So what you got to look for is the little stuff in the background. Like, we're going to point out. I was surprised myself how many things I was picking out because I thought, Oh, maybe I'm a bigger weave than I thought.

Well, if you watch, you know, if you watch the first race, you're going to see things like the 18th band, the speed race review, yeah, no, I'm looking forward to watching it again. So I can actually pay attention to the little things going on rather than a story. Yeah, just to let you know listening right now, we'll hit on the book a little bit during this commentary, but we will have a full blown movie to page dissection in a later episode where all of us here will either be refreshed on the book or have heard or read the book for the first time. And I'm looking forward to seeing the different things you pick out in this one as well.

Yeah. So as always go get your food because we're about to press play. Can I have popcorn? Does it have to be like real food?

Of course sounds good. Doesn't it? Is everybody right? Oh my god, it's happening for everybody playing at home.

We are watching on Blu Ray. We are at zero Colin zero, Colin zero one. I don't know why I said Colin's and everything just work one second into it. So if you're ready to play three, two, and one like it's kind of misleading right now because it's very fucking quiet at the beginning.

Yeah, so I make you feel like you screwed up because it gets into the more brothers in the village road show logos. Yeah, I mean, you got access logo, but then there's a very classical about the pop up. Oh, is it typically sound? Well, yeah, but the key thing is I think it's because of the music that kicks in in a couple moments.

Okay. Once they cry to be in that nice false sense of like, oh, okay. Get comfortable watching movies. Nice and peaceful and calm.

Yeah. Oh, there we go. I like Star Lord to do that. Like I said, 1980s rock music.

Right. All right. Jump. I mean, yeah.

And I'll probably next contribution a lot to his commentary is every song my age. Yeah. They did really good job on these stacks. They did.

And I like the inclusion of drones in this fly around delivering things and you know whatnot. And just like those you're right. And doesn't have to give you really any kind of exposition on like why it's like this. You'll get a little exposition momentarily, but you're just know it's a different world right now.

Yep. I did ask you that yesterday when I was watching it. And it's about this point. Yeah.

Why is it like that? There's Pete's having delivered to a somewhat slender gentleman. Yeah. Oh, it's like everybody's pretty normal here.

There's not really any like freaking rednecks or trailer trash or anything like that. It's pretty much like, wait, sorry to trailer trash right now. Yeah. Well, that's she's probably making money or credits.

Oh, yeah. I miss Gilmore. Grandma's in this. Exposition.

And I'm glad he did this part too because him and his little hideout and he went full board with it. They could easily get him like some storage unit or anything like that. But no, it's the man in cars. Yeah, this was a very cool hideaway.

I like today. It's always been a bummer. It's more of a bummer than it. The only thing I would have really liked to see is how he got that treadmill in there.

Oh, good point. It's been an interesting little piece of story. I love that they have the IOI logo on just about everything. Oh, yeah.

And I think the IOI is creative and clever because computer language ones and zeros. Yes. Yeah. Yeah.

Very. This was the part when I was in the theater first seen it when I saw Minecraft this prominent. I was like, Oh, fuck. But luckily, that was it.

That's all the Minecraft you're going to get in this movie people. I thought it was Legos. Exactly. Well, you're like, yeah.

It's not really not towards Minecraft. It was more like, I don't want to see that type of stuff in here. Yeah, like that. You got the pyramids, you can climb out Everest with Batman.

Hell yeah. Yeah. Well, I was person bingling though. I'm looking certain.

Yeah, let me be easier to do a Superman. Yeah. Come on. You're taking away from the iconic, you know, like he's actually scaling it like 66 Batman.

It's true. True. True. Our first real big look into the oasis and all the random characters.

The battle toads there's a carbon, the Martian Martian. So we're finally fancy characters. Goro. And I think the biggest reason they got all these licenses and everything was because.

Yeah. Somebody else was directing this. I don't think they would have gotten as much as they got. Planet.

I think this is where we see Freddie shortly. Yeah, you're going to get Freddie. Yeah, there's Freddie. There was Freddie.

Duke Mookums in here too. No way, really? Yeah. There's Duke never my name is.

Is that supposed to be Power Glove? Looks like the gauntlet. Yeah, possibly Anthony Gellant. Yeah, it's very power glove.

Yeah. I think that's a power shock, right? Oh, yeah. Yeah.

I've never seen the one problem we have when it's a straight up movie, not like some shitty movie. We get quite really easy. You get sucked in. Exactly.

Because it's a good movie. I'm like cats. Memories. No, forget please.

There's J. Sine. No, Snake was ignoring the little flashlights. Yes.

This is a funny, I laughed hard when I was in the theater and they did that. I think it's a bad round. Yeah. I didn't mention this yesterday.

How they was originally the role was offered to Jean Wilder. Oh, that would have been kind of cool. Yeah. Yeah.

Because that's how Stephen Spielberg built about the character and everything. But as we learn later, Jean was dealing with Alzheimer's and everything and he felt like he couldn't give it a hundred percent. Well, it's a good second. Yeah, Mark.

Well, Rayless, he was in Stephen Spielberg's movie, Tom Hanks, British wise, he won the Oscar for that movie. Oh, yeah. And then also you saw a sign peg there too as Og tomorrow. Oh, that was Simon.

Oh, you thought it was the Windows dial thing. No, that was Chrome. Oh, Chrome, whatever. Yeah.

Some computer program. One thing that you got to mention right now, this compared to the book, the initial video from the book, I would killed to see done on the screen and all this glory with all the references from Heathers and Dead Man's Party and do everything. Yeah. These are all aspects of the book that were, you know, it was probably so bad that you like we'd love to do it.

But the licensing rights for everything that they needed would have been astronomical. And that's before you even start production. Kind of in the main of Ghostbusters, the French rights alone. I do love this part, how he was explaining everything.

So no clarify something. Is this a new challenge that was like time released or it was like an ongoing thing that they've just been in their building it up in the story. So you'd follow along. No, no, no, this is well, this is all, you know, like preconceived.

He like, no, okay, when he found out he was sick, he was dying. Yeah. He decided he wanted to do this Easter egg hunt to have fun. Since the world kind of sucks.

And then also you find a person that would deserve to own his stake in the company. And the book what they tell you is that he wanted people who were into the things that he was into and felt the way that he felt because he wanted somebody not corporate to take over. Not six years. You know, definitely not finalized.

It was like, for this, have a role, Artemis and all these kids are. Yeah. Were they just raised in all this? Yes.

Yeah. Yeah. No, this contest was like most of the people that have been raised in there were in the Oasis already. That's another thing.

It's kind of like every looking at like on their slide out broadcasting. But most people were logged into the Oasis like changed how no one would go to they changes how the world behave. There was a whole different world you could go to where you could be anything you want. Still make money and you can they have school they'd have everything.

So how long has this contest been? It's been several years about in the book on the stage. It's a long time in the book. Eight years before somebody started to cross on.

Yeah. Okay. So he's had eight years of preparation. Let's just assume that he's I don't know, 20.

Yeah. He's had all that time to. Okay. But the Lord, because they were talking something about first person found the first clue to that first key.

And then it kind of like fizzled out because nobody could find it or figure the race started and we can win it. Yes. Artemis. Like the cutest avocar on the planet.

Right flashback from our past episode to hot to be 2D. I fuck her. There's Christine from the Stephen King films. They showed the 18 van.

You'll see a couple of them right here as it goes. Of course there's classic Bigfoot. All the six are there. There's a Batmobile right there.

That's a pole position. The Akira bike. Yeah, which I was really happy with that they pulled off here. They didn't try to go Oh, let's do the Tron like this bike.

Oh, that's because it was awesome. Yeah. I think it is like going great there or something else to but they went 80s. Yeah, 80s classic Bigfoot.

Well, it sucks to be you. How was your day? Well, I got hit by train and zeroed out. Yeah, son of a bitch.

I love that nickname. The six are fixer. Yeah. You gotta think those tracks and everything are probably a little bit of a hot wheels nod.

Yeah, I would think so too. You know, like I said, the book references so much to see what they did with what they well, you remember the fees that we could couple pages of the books had like what is a crammed with references. That did just got decapitated. Yeah.

And coins fell out of and he's collecting coins and he fueled the Deloria because he's poor because he's broke which is I do like that they touch on how poor he is. Yeah. And I said he's resourceful stuff. Yeah, I'd be the same way.

I may say it's our gassibly but oh, there's a T-ring much bigger to it. Yeah. I think I don't like to just race to collect coins. Yeah, just be the last car.

That's jake on. So I got to die and pick it up. One day notice just I don't know if you notice it too when they were traveling from their little China in the theater said Jack on it. Oh, yeah.

Yeah. Batman 66, battle mill. Yeah. There goes the Batman 66, that one.

No. At least he didn't eat. Oh, I never noticed that. What?

They kit bar. Yeah. Oh, it's the same. They tried to stick as much as they could from the book.

Yeah. So you remember the book is D'Oring out the Ghostbusters logo on the side. Yeah. It had the bucker who bonds I think strapped to the hood.

Yeah. And then it had the insider. Inside. I only can get the not really going.

Right. I've never noticed until now. There it is. There's Pee-wee's bike.

Oh. Now if you guys want when you're going through this and they go into each place, you can freeze it and you'll see right off the bat. There's the iron giant. And down the way, you should see an Ed 209 from Robocop.

See where it is. Well, there's a, yeah. Oh, that's right. There's the space bar one.

I mean, long starts right there. I was speaking of random lunch boxes, Empire's 40th anniversary coming up soon. We just got a load of stuff at Target. We got lunch boxes.

Really? Moggys and everything. Huh. I will have to make up a lunch box.

Yeah. Exactly. No, there is unfortunately. Oh, man.

That's everybody's favorite first shooter. Hi, the buggles. Other people can read the ingredients, but you're a gun rapper. I love that guy.

Hi, bro. Does he get a high five at all in this entire movie? I don't think so. No.

Because high five's are like and also can kill you now. But yeah. Oh, the other day, I got my first foot bunk that work. What?

Foot bunk? I'm teaching everybody at the store to do that. Yeah. Yeah.

I help the guy find a game. He's like, very cool. And I'm like, what the hell? Almost like a lifter's dick out.

But then I realized I was like, bro, I'm a little research on that and make sure there's no underlying homosexual. Well, I know. I was like, porn, I was like a porn, category. But yeah.

I've just heard some things about foot tapping and that's in the bathroom. I don't know the wrong way. I just wanted some TP, but she never mind. Well, just be careful.

Yeah. She just gave him a boner. Give me a boner. If anybody does have a bluer with you and haven't checked out the special features, the behind the scenes they do show them acting in front of the screens and everything to do all their.

Really? Have a hard stuff. I think they did pretty well like getting this aspect of his life down from the book to here. Might as well.

Yeah. But a lot of people live in one place. Well, it's hard to get behind a hero of something if you know, he's like, he's kind of indifferent about his analysis. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. Also to analysis. The book was a bitch.

Well, yeah. Or exposition. Yeah. They took walking on the song.

No. Okay. Okay. Okay.

They did this really well to the holiday journals. Yes. I wish his name were Nigel. He just seems like a Nigel, right?

Yeah. So why is Holiday kind of, is he just socially awkward? Yeah. He's like a super genius.

He's described as horribly socially awkward. I think they said like asperger's. They said that they thought that he might have some level of asper. Yeah.

On the spectrum somewhere. Yeah. Okay. Well, he's a savant.

Oh, big time. This be some Vader's t-shirt. That's not sure. I caught talking that a good job with a lot of their merch that they had for Ready Player One.

Still need to get my hands on the Dankel and the Dark Sixer. Okay. Not to dive too much into the book right now. As we know, the race is the first key here.

In the book, it wasn't in a D&D walk through leading to the game of Joust, right? Right. It was a D&D module from the 70s and you had to maneuver your way through the dungeon and then battle the the lich, the demi-lich at the end in a game of Joust. Best two out of three.

Yeah, which if listening to this, you have not read or listened to the book because there's a really good audio but version of it with Will Wheaton reading it. Yes. And it's super- I think Will Wheaton read it. Well, they make reference to him in the book that Will Wheaton and I can't remember the other dude are the president and vice president of the Oasis.

And they make all of the executive decisions in there. Oh, it's rad. Oh, we're about to see what he figured out. It's honestly a pretty cool way to do it.

It wasn't shabby at all. Yeah. Because one thing we should mention right now too, one of the writers of this movie was Ernest Loy. He was able to adapt.

His whole thing was he wanted to make sure that we captured the spirit of it. Yeah. And he trusted and let go and understood fully. I'm sure like most of us do that the sheer licensing to create something like this would be impossible.

So this was the best case scenario they could do and bring his story to the to the big screen. It's like he's off the grid. The ones and zeros are in him. Can'ts pissed.

So very familiar music coming up. Yeah. I can just look back to the future. It just makes me smile.

Yeah. And I love what she says to him. She calls him someone. calls him a fly.

Yeah. I wish I could say that in daily life to people get yourself a clue. Right. I haven't come across that sweet.

Yeah. You go. They come off as an asshole. Exactly.

Sorento. Ben. Excuse me. Ben Mendelssohn playing him.

Yeah. Great actor. Great. Feeling honestly.

Great assholes. Yeah. Yeah. It's almost like he was the popular jock in high slow and everything.

But then all this stuff became popular. So he's like, oh, I'm in. We're looking character who was never in the book. Yeah.

What? Yeah. They just created this like hitman. Basically.

Yeah. His odd job. I like that disclaimer. Yeah.

Before the seizures. They go 81% were fucked. Now this brought me out just a little bit because in the book, these artifacts are for one by completing the different missions. Yeah.

Like they play through the entire Goonies storyline as actual characters and goonies or whatever it is. And you get different things like that. Oh, so they're like agreements rather than being able to buy. Yeah.

But also too, when you get through the book and everything, you're going to realize it's so fucking vast. I like that they call it the Zemeckers. Yeah. I love that crap.

Like if they would have gone completely from the book, it would have been a limited series with at least two seasons. I would have been okay with that. I would have been fine with it too. But they had to test the waters.

Yeah. Well, if you got to modify the story a little bit to make it fit on the screen. Yeah. And they do.

Great job. As we just said. So it's a long film to begin with. Yeah.

What universe is studios to make a ride? Right. That'd be cool. Ready player one ride.

Or even like a Halloween Horror Knight's Maze. Oh, that'd be cool too. Oh, so we're in the world right now. Yeah.

And I like how they altered this up a bit. I do too. In the book, I rock is just a knob. This dude just looks like a hooked up Superman.

I don't like him. What is to do? I don't know. I was going to.

It's a grainy. It's almost kind of a rice pasta sort of thing. It's kind of gross. So it's probably I rock.

There's a good one's box right there. Mod Y box. That's one of the guns from Duke Nukem right there. That's a multi-sided dice.

Oh, inside the orb? Yeah. The orb of us rock. Yeah.

He just wanted to say that. Yeah. That's something I think they kind of missed out on this one to see who is controlling Iraq. Even that like a stinger scene in the credits is TJ Miller and a fat suit.

Right. That's the bandit, right? Yeah. It's weird because it looked like it was blue on one sign that is bandit.

Oh, there's the bike. Oh, the power of my car. Yeah. I saw him hooking up the battery.

You know, to do everything, but I didn't see the very charges of my pedal. It might be completely guilty and seeing their power like that at a point. It would be nice. It's funny because there's several things they got so right.

Oh, yeah. I think it's all under like we said. There's so much to that damn book. Yeah.

That they executed it well. This holds its own as a movie and the book still holds its own as a book, but they still complement each other very, very well. I love that they, you know, show the past Karen or Kira. Sorry.

Kira. They call it. Kira Kira or the any character. All these roles.

One way or another. Bye. Bye. Okay.

We'll do some. It's like a virtual who's who. Yeah, it's just a scene. Right now.

It was Goro. Yeah. White rapper. Emoji.

There was a predator and then there was also a lot of craft. This is a good side gag right here. This is pretty good. Is that alien?

Yeah. Uh-huh. Clark Kent glasses. Hydrate entity without changing your look.

That's kind of cool. We should pulled off his glasses. Yeah. It was a smart butts still.

No. Well, he was second in the lines of business. Yeah. That's not what Oasis was about.

Yeah. Yeah. This is a sterile. So we watched the movie.

I've done the same thing. Gotta wait for at least a fifth day before they can see it dance or lack of dancing. You danced just like. There's something to the scene when we get to the end of the movie.

We'll discuss a little bit more because he noticed it there. Dina. Huh? Do you notice it there too?

Yeah, of course. And Kim say never gone like what? No, I don't know what you're talking about. Because you're supposed to only write positive stuff in journals.

That's what my therapist tells me. How's that working out for you? I haven't written in my journal in a year. But my new dad was when I was in London.

Okay. So that's a pretty positive shit right there. That's right. She doesn't look like this lead.

Sorry. Spoiler alert. Prospo. Right.

Yeah. Someone won't show you. What? Someone won't show her.

Can I see it first? Sure. Cool. Okay.

Here comes a Wil Wheaton Easter egg. I'm looking on the wall next to you. Parsable. Oh, yeah.

Campaign poster. Campaign poster form. Yep. Next is Beast Master poster and Rad Max poster.

And this is a huge point in the book, which this is another part where I was like, oh, I wish they would have been in here more. Yes. Pick a lot for this download. Fucker.

What is buckaroo bonsai? Nick? What's buckaroo bonsai? Oh, to move you with Peter Weller set the future where they find a way to drive through solid matter.

There's a little machine that they use to the car and it causes like a rift in dimensions and stuff comes through. It was originally a novel, isn't it? Or yeah. Yeah.

That's a running joke on the book, by the way. Yeah. 300 pound guy named Chuck. There's the Firefly.

He's the Time Fighters go by. There's the drop ship from Aliens. There's a dude in a skin type suit. How does it feel to treat you like you do?

Yeah. It feels like a skin type suit. How does it feel? Just show the balls like good.

Harley Quinn's running around here. We're getting another batch of people, honestly. Is that back? Well, yep.

Parademon? Maybe it might be a Parademon. Cats. Some weird furry thing.

More cats with big tits. Yeah. So probably furry. Because you know how the internet likes their furries.

I really don't. I'm concerned that you do. No. Mine was accidental.

And it was from Matt White. Oh, no. Yeah. Believe it or not.

Yeah. She does look awesome. Oh, yeah. Right.

So there's Harley Quinn. And people. Probably just ran the Mavatars. The blue chick looks like one of the like a more person or something.

Like Middle Eastern gods. Yeah. One of the battle toads. So the battle toads are everywhere in his name.

Which ties in great to the movie. Again, the writing, you know. Yeah. Just showcases through on this one.

But in the book, the district district is always a place where he's a DJ. Yeah. He goes by the great and powerful job. That's the chaper there to the Death Star.

Yep. You said chest. Yeah. I like the way that her dress has like this trail.

Right. Paper. Dance Dance Revolution. Smart move.

Put on my dance fever. Shoes. That's all he did. Just uploaded a pack to be able to go hiking dance.

Really. There's several characters in here from Fortnite. And Overwatch. Yeah.

There's Joe. And Justin's Joker. You're touching. I'll be getting a bill something else.

Yeah. Dark. Yeah. That's what it said on the box.

Let me just come up in between your legs and rub up on you. No comment though. Oh wait. I should have said that a lot.

This avatar does have kind of a bully aspect to it. Oh, I could see that. Yeah. Because I'm stupid.

I'm going to tell you mine. I was pissed at this thing because I was like, why do it so quickly? True. But I mean, but after the movie was done and everything, I thought it was like, no, they had to do what they had to do.

She's using the pulse rifle for aliens. We're kind of busy right now. We got to go out the time or the place. This one gets some coins.

Relations to check out. Oh, yeah. That's an old school 80s. Like like, like, yeah.

I love that. Could have done it when we started getting shot at. They collected more coin this way. True.

And we could guess somewhere. Any of us live in the real world? Balls. Exactly.

I kind of wonder how much they let T. Day Miller kind of roll with it. Like how much improv they let him do. I always talk about with her.

She is basically created for the movie. Yeah. And she's really just mostly exposition. Yeah.

She gave her a pointy to point me. Yeah. Because if you read the book and everything, there's like you said, it's vast. There's way, way too much.

It looks like a smart car that they jacked up and put on like monster truck wheels, but on a smaller scale. Come on. Yeah. This is probably one of those just like random things.

Like, let's see who can catch that. And the guy with the stupid tattoo. Yeah. The creepy guy with the face tattoo.

Is that how they were in it? Oh, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, it's always smart to answer the email from the evil guy. Nothing bad ever happens. Well, when you're a young kid, who was parents, they did keep this aspect of the this one was really cool.

That's a tron thing, right? No. Okay. This is just illustrating the whole chat rooms.
