Why One Bad Memory Made Him Fear Every Repair
from The Human Diagnostic
He had the checkbook out before I had the panel back on the unit. It was late August, the kind of afternoon in Kingfisher County where the wind feels like it's coming out of a dryer vent. Brick ranch on the edge of town, built in the eighties, one shade tree on the wrong side of the house. The homeowner was in his late forties, steady job, clean garage. The kind of fellow who labels his breaker panel. I'll say up front that this call is a composite. It's pieces of a lot of kitchens and a lot of driveways over 47 years in this trade, so don't go looking for the house. The condenser fan motor had quit. That made three trips to that address in two summers. Different part every time, same system, well past twenty years old and tired in every way a system gets tired. I told him what I found and what it would cost to get him cooling that afternoon. Then I told him the honest part, which is that I could keep fixing that unit, but I couldn't tell him what would go next or when. He asked what a new system would run. I gave him the number. He nodded. No flinch at all. Then I mentioned that a lot of folks spread that out with a monthly payment, and his whole face changed. "I don't do payments," he said. Not angry. Flat. Like a man telling you he doesn't swim. So he wrote the check for the repair. And while I filled out the invoice he told me the rest, the way people do once the pressure is off. He got out of school and into his first real job right as the dot-com boom came apart. He watched older fellows at work lose their retirement on paper and then lose their jobs for real. He bought his first house in 2007. You know what came next. He watched neighbors on his street hand their keys to the bank. He kept his house, but he told me he didn't sleep right for two years. Core line: "If a payment is on the page, the terms come straight off the lender's paper, not out of my mouth, and he reads them without me standing over him."
