Why our governments must implement the UN anti-torture protocol (OPCAT)

Jennifer speaks with Andreea Lachsz from the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service about the UN anti-torture protocol (OPCAT). This follows their initial discussion on this topic in mid July 2021. Australia signed the Protocol several years ago but has failed to fund and organise for its implementation – even though the extended deadline is 20 January 2022.    The Protocol would establish a system of visits by independent bodies to places of detention, to prevent torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.     Andreea explains the importance of Australia meeting its OPCAT obligations, especially given the high level of incarceration of Aboriginal people, and their pervasive ill treatment while in custody.     She tells us what we can do to get OPCAT implemented.     Contact the Attorney General:Australia:   Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash T: (02) 6277 7300E: [email protected]: Ms Jaclyn Symes MLCT: (03) 8684 1111E: [email protected]
