Why Relationships Resist Automation
from Be A Funky Teacher Podcast
Episode SummaryIn this episode, I reflect on working with a student who struggled with selective mutism and found speaking in front of others incredibly difficult. Progress did not happen through a program, a device, or a quick intervention. It developed slowly through patience, encouragement, family support, collaboration with school staff, and a relationship built carefully over time.I explore why relationships operate differently from systems designed around speed, efficiency, scalability, and automation. Trust, confidence, communication, and emotional growth cannot simply be rushed. Students often need adults who consistently listen, encourage them, believe in their potential, and create enough safety for them to take small but meaningful risks. This connects directly to the breakthroughs educators see in classrooms. Academic and personal growth often follow relational safety. When students feel seen, supported, and understood, they may become more willing to participate, communicate, make mistakes, and believe in themselves. Those moments are deeply human and difficult to standardize.Technology will continue to support learning, and educational systems will continue to change. But students are not machines, and their growth cannot be reduced to programs or automated responses. Meaningful education will always depend on trust, empathy, mentorship, collaboration, and caring adults who continue showing up over time.Show NotesSupporting a student with selective mutismTrust and confidence developing over timeWhy empathy cannot be automatedRelationships as the foundation for student growthCollaboration among families and school staffThe lasting impact of human connectionKey TakeawaysTrust develops through consistent human interactionSome student growth cannot be rushedRelationships often create the conditions for breakthroughsTechnology cannot replace authentic empathyStudents remember how caring adults made them feel
